Bodies of Intimacy, 2023
These photographs show bodies
— human and nonhuman, living and nonliving —
in moments that feel intimate.
I have been reflecting a lot about how any definition of a human cannot draw a stark line between ourselves and others (there is significant overlap between the intelligences of humans & nonhuman beings, between the biology of our bodies and others, between the role we play in our world and the role others play). In these photographs, I explored my own body alongside multiple bodies of water, the physical presence of my oversized comforter, the mangled and transformed bellies and arms of discarded waste, the legs of a freeway overpass, the embrace of the ocean, and much more. I created this body of work (get it!?) alongside my eco art explorations which both informed each other and brought me closer to the ever-complex world around me.
The photographs are a mix of digital and 35-mm film (black & white and color), all processed digitally. I enjoy working with distortion when photographing as I often am trying to photograph things I do not understand and the distortions represent my grasping for something that isn’t quite there… yet.
